3 Image Editors You Can Use for Free

In the spirit of keeping things simple rather than providing a long list of The Top 50 Image Editors for 2009 I’d like to offer 3 image editors to pick from when working with images.

I use these in the context of quickly editing images – cropping, resizing, brightening, etc. These are some of the simpler image editing tasks that you might need to perform now and again without starting up some humongous, expensive image editor.

If you don’t own the irrepressibly popular Photoshop (and expensive by the way) or any of the other photo editing tools our there then hopefully one of these tools or all 3 will suit your needs when the time calls for it.

Here are 3 free image editors you can use to work on images. Two are online resources and one is a Windows application that is fast and gets the job done.

1. Picnik

A very popular online image editing tool, Picnik allows you to open images from flickr, MySpace, Facebook, and Photobucket to name a few.

Picnik offers some standard image editing features such as: fix underexposed photos, remove red-eye, one-click fixes including auto-fix, exposure, colors, red-eye, rotate, crop, resize, and sharpening.

By providing these image editing features online Picknik works right in your browser which makes it nice and handy.

2. Adobe Photoshop Online

Okay, okay. Can’t live without Photoshop? Try their free online version called Photoshop Express. Not only do you get an incredible online editor in your browser, you get your own URL – http://billbolmeier.photoshop.com. PDC – Pretty Darn Cool. You get the typical image editing features as well as 2GB of storage. That’s a lot but for an extreme enthusiast you’ll probably want to buy some more space.

3. Paint.NET

Paint.NET is a free Windows application that runs using the Microsoft .NET Framework. On the what? Don’t worry you don’t need to know if you don’t already know.

I use Paint.NET constantly. It’s a Windows program that loads quickly and provides many standard image editing features such as: layers, blurring, sharpening, red-eye removal, distortion, noise, embossing, 3D Rotate/Zoom effects, brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, curves, levels, convert an image to black and white, or sepia-toned, power tools, a history list, frequent updates and an active community.
