How to Find and Promote People on Twitter – #followfriday

February 19, 2009 in Twitter

Want to find new people to follow on twitter or promote someone on twitter?  #followfriday is way to do just that.  The rules are – suggest someone to follow and why – per tweet.  Well, loosely anyway.

The # symbol in front of followfriday is known as a hashtag, which on twitter represents a topic.  In this case the topic is followfriday.

You list the users you recommend people follow, followed by the #followfriday.  Some folks list one person per tweet and why you need to follow them.  Which is good because it could be something like, “He’s a great web designer.”  At least this lets you know right away if you want to follow web designers.  But what a lot of folks end up doing is just listing a few people to follow in the same tweet.

Another way to view #followfriday is to browse over to http://www.tweetchat.com, login with your twitter account info and enter the room followfriday.  This allows you to follow the #followfriday tweets as well as change rooms to view tweets on other topics you might be following with hashtags.

Check out this graph over at hashtags.org that shows the activity for #followfriday.  An extremely popular event every Friday.  Pretty darn cool.
