Starting a Blog When There’s Way Too Many Blogs In The World

As I mentioned in my Selecting A Domain Registrar and Web Host Solution for BillBolmeier.com article, a blog is a type of website. A blog typically lists articles or blog posts as they’re called, in reverse chronological order (newest to oldest).

You can pick any topic to blog about that you’d like. It may be a personal blog that you update for family and friends or a blog you use to promote yourself or a business.

How Do I Start A Blog?

When starting a blog you’re faced with many choices of blogging platforms such as Google’s Blogger, Automattic’s WordPress.com, as well as Automattic’s WordPress software you can host yourself.  LiveJournal and TypePad are also blogging platforms.  There are plenty of other blog publishing sites around the web.

I’m running my blog with the domain name of  billbolmeier.com.  I use the blog software called WordPress from WordPress.org, which is self-hosted blog software, more on that later.

WordPress.com is the free blogging software you can use to start a blog right away.  WordPress.com hosts your blog on their servers.  You only control what they give you.

With a self-hosted WordPress site using the blog software from WordPress.org, there are more on-going management tasks involved, but on the other hand you can control every aspect of your blog, unlike WordPress.com blogging software.

Some of those tasks include:

  1. Registering a Domain Name – billbolmeier.com in my case
  2. Selecting a Web Hosting site to install WordPress on
  3. Configuring WordPress software to run the way you want

There is a clear choice if you want to start a personal blog that reports on information for family and friends.  Use Blogger or WordPress.com so you can get a good feel for blogging.

If you’re starting a blog for business you might consider hiring someone to manage the technical tasks of your blog whether you’re a technical person or not.  The time it takes to manage a blog is better used for more important tasks that pertain to your business.

There’s plenty more to talk about on starting a blog so make sure you subscribe to billbolmeier.com using the form below.

Your turn. If you’ve got anything to add to this article let everyone know in the comments.
