The Georgia indictments are enormous news. There’s a lot to take in, and there are excellent takes on what’s going on. But our advocacy is what can help save democracy, not drowning in indictment outcomes.
While it’s essential to our democracy and the rule of law, there is very little we can do about the indictments. They will play out over the years, and we will be little more than bystanders.
It will not affect whether or not Donald Trump or someone just as bad as him can win the presidency next year in 2024. What’s important is that none of this will affect whether or not Republicans and their Christian nationalist backers continue on their path to destroy America.
What Indictments Don’t Do
The indictments are not going to protect marginalized communities.
They will not help with the 12 spending bills we need our lawmakers to pass by September 30, 2023, to prevent a government shutdown.
Which Republicans can’t agree on these indictments won’t help with the Farm Bill that has to pass this year.
It won’t help that Republicans are seeking to slash funds for nutritional assistance right now.
These indictments will not impact the National Defense Authorization Act, which must pass this year. Republicans right now are trying to pack with anti-woke and pro-fossil fuel provisions.
These indictments won’t stop the next mass shooting.
They won’t:
- Restore our bodily autonomy.
- Force ethics on the Supreme Court.
- Fix our broken immigration system or pay your student loans.
- Close the giant tax loophole that big corporations and billionaires currently enjoy.
Holding Trump and his co-conspirators accountable is necessary and wildly overdue. But it won’t solve our MAGA problem, which has infected the entire Republican Party.
Advocacy, Votes, And Tireless Work
What will solve it is our advocacy and our votes. Our tireless work to engage all freedom-loving Americans. That will allow us to elect ethical, smart, and Democracy-supporting representatives to office everywhere.
That is what will save, reform, and reimagine the country. That is what we need to focus on. Join in.
