In his book The Mass Psychology of Fascism, Wilhelm Reich wrote about how fascism came to power in Germany prior to World War II. There’s a lot in this book that’s terrifyingly relevant, but on this point precisely, he says:
The more a man who belongs to the broad working masses is nonpolitical, the more susceptible he is to the ideology of political reaction.
To be non-political is not, as one might suppose, evidence of a passive psychic condition, but of a highly active attitude, a defense against the awareness of social responsibility.
In 2023 we can safely say that anybody who identifies as apolitical or nonpolitical is not interested in being responsible to their community or the plight of the marginalized around them.
