In the ongoing battle of book bans, here’s how to ban the Bible from your child’s school library.
Is someone trying to get books banned in your school library? Maybe they already got some banned. The person(s) trying to do that is usually a member of Moms for Liberty or that ilk. They might be trying to do that under the guise of “explicit content” or the non-existent CRT issue, which is really their racism showing if they believe CRT is being taught in your child’s school.
If you’re a parent and have seen this happen, you can even the playing field by reviewing the school district’s book-banning policy. If the school district is going to remove books based on the viewpoint of a certain segment of the population, they must do so fairly and consistently. They cannot remove books from the library because one group finds them objectionable.
Colorado’s Academy District 20
In 2023, a parent in Colorado emailed their school district twice, asking them to ban the Bible due to its sexually explicit content. The person who sent this email intended not to get the Bible out of the school libraries. Instead, the parent wanted to point out that the school district violated its book-banning policy.
Neither the Moms for Liberty nor the parent who emailed about banning the Bible did that through a formal process which is how it works in Colorado. But the board saw how banning the books broke their policy, and for now, the Bible and books remain in their library.
Parents can keep their children from checking out a book they deem inappropriate. Ask your school’s library how to do that.
The Effects Of Banning Books
Banning books is a way of suppressing information and ideas. This can have many negative consequences, such as limiting our exposure to new ideas and experiences. In today’s political climate, this is the goal of Republican, conservative, evangelical, and culture-Christian billionaires.
