In a democracy, does President Biden have the authority to pass any bills if we never get a functioning house? The answer is no, he could not.
We have three branches of government:
- Legislative Branch: Includes the House of Representatives and the Senate. Collectively known as Congress. The branch is responsible for creating, amending, and passing federal laws.
- Executive Branch: Headed by the President. This branch enforces federal laws, manages national affairs and foreign policy, oversees federal agencies, and commands the armed forces.
- Judicial Branch: Headed by the Supreme Court. This branch interprets federal laws and the U.S. Constitution, ensures justice, and adjudicates disputes about federal laws or the constitutionality of laws.
Only Congress can pass laws. The President can sign those laws and must, or he can veto them, but neither can do the other’s job.
We can’t pass laws without a functioning House. There’s no way President Biden can override them or go around them. That is the House’s job.
That is why a particular segment of the Republican Party that doesn’t want a government is a huge problem.
Because that’s their job, government is their job. Being a lawmaker. Making laws. Passing budgets. Listening to their constituents. Sending aid to the countries we want to send aid to. That’s what they’re there for.
The Republican-led House continues to be in disarray. They do not have a platform. There’s a part of their party that does not want government.
They only want to destroy, divide, incite violence, and profit from their billionaire backers.
That is not a platform. It’s not a legislative platform.
You Can’t Have A Democracy That Way
So what they have instead is this kind of corruption. You can’t run a government that way. You can’t have a democracy that way.
The government requires building consensus. Thinking about policy. And working to pass it.
Republicans don’t want to do that. They don’t want government.
And so, no, President Biden can’t save us from this.
The only thing that can save us from this is for every American to vote.
Every American must vote in every election. You cannot take your vote for granted anymore.
Every off-season election counts. Every election counts in every primary and general election. We must get out and vote. We must vote every Republican out of office.
The only answer it that we must save ourselves.
