We need to redefine democracy for us.
In Tennessee, after another school shooting, we are seeing exactly what the institutions of the state do. It upholds the foundation of the state and not the people who make up the state.
Democracy was never for the people. It was for those who created the system itself. We are seeing states challenge the rule of the people.
The state wants to make sure we know our exact place. And our place is to be at work. Our place is to be a commodity. Our place is to produce for the system.
What republican politicians and their white evangelical christian nationalist backers are doing is using the institutions for their benefit. And the biggest institution they have outside of the government is the law.
So they will enact what they want, their definition of democracy, which is our subjugation.
We cannot put these protests on our kids. It is not their responsibility. Kids are picking up the slack of what we adults need to do as well.
If democracy is for the people and by the people, then we need to take it back. It has always been broken because it was never democratic.
We must redefine democracy in our image, not the state’s image. The state will push its image up to the Supreme Court to get its way. And the Supreme Court as it stands right now, because of its balance, can make sure that it’s embedded once again back in the foundations of the United States. A place we don’t want to go to.
Time to take it back.
