Fascism in America. The Supreme Court of The United States (SCOTUS) is a captured court. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but it’s true. The sooner we accept it, the better.
The billionaires and the Christian nationalists are pulling the conservative Justices’ strings. This is Leonard Leo, the Adelsons, the Mercers, and the Kochs. These special interest groups who helped get them seated tell these conservative Justices which cases to take and which way to rule. That’s a huge problem. This is not a normal court. And certainly, there’s an argument that it’s never been normal, always looking out for the vulture class.
This Is Fascism
This is exactly what fascism looks like. We keep talking about it encroaching, and it’s here. Right now.
“Fascist” describes a system where a leader or small group of politicians claims to power, suppresses opposition and the press, and works to limit people’s freedoms and their ability to have a voice in the political system. These systems often embrace a nationalist ideology and cultural uniformity and compliance, and act out against racial, ethnic, or cultural minority groups.
It’s important to talk about the captured supreme court. It’s important to talk about the fact that we are fighting fascism like we were in World War II. Make sure everyone understands it. The good news is we still have a voice. We still have our votes. We still have a chance to stop this. It’s not going to be easy. It won’t happen overnight, but it can be done. No question.
Don’t slip into hopelessness or cynicism and give up. We are in a long-term fight for justice.
For persistence, we must think about the Dred Scott decision. In 1857, it held that African Americans were not and could never be citizens of the United States. Imagine how Black Americans felt during that time: the grief, the betrayal, the sickness in their souls. And even so, they did not give up. They persisted. And we are going to persist as well.
The Battle
We are in a battle for the soul of America. Even though the previous president has done horrible things and has over 30 federal indictments against him, he and his cronies are still effectively coming after our freedoms.
They’re using the Supreme Court to do what they couldn’t do through legislation because it’s unpopular. And right now, it is working for them. We can defeat them. But to do so, we really need to fight like hell.
Closing
Remember what Frederick Douglass said, “If there’s no struggle, there’s no progress. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did, and it never will.”
Commit to engaging in that struggle. Commit to demanding that we take power back for the many, not the money. We can do this.
