Minneapolis. August 27th, 2025. 8:30 AM. The first day of school. Children sitting in a church pew. A gunman with a rifle. Two dead. Fourteen wounded—three injured adults. A nation numb.
I woke up to the news. It’s horrifying—but it’s familiar. Expected. Routine.
Because this is who we’ve decided to be.
America Made Its Choice
We made this decision as a country after Sandy Hook and after Uvalde, TX. More than 60% of citizens in Uvalde, TX, voted Republican after their mass shooting in 2022.
We’ve proven, time and again, that the right to own a weapon outweighs a child’s right to live.
And we’ve repeated that decision, over and over, in every election since.
Yes, polls indicate that 80%, and possibly even 90%, of Americans support universal background checks and other fundamental reforms. But we don’t vote like it.
We keep electing politicians—especially Republicans—who are wholly owned by the gun lobby. The NRA. They block every measure. Every time. Without fail.

If 90% of Americans really wanted change, we’d have it by now.
It’s not a tragedy. It’s a decision.
This Is America
We are a mentally and morally ill nation—a culture so broken that we’ve normalized children being shot while praying in church on their first day of school.
And then what? We cry. We pray.
And then we do nothing. Again. And again. And again.
This is not senseless. This is policy.
This is not tragic. This is intentional.
This is not surprising. This is American.
There is nothing more American than what happened.
What Now?
- Demand action from your state legislators—red flag laws, background checks, assault weapons bans. Find your Senators and House Representative.
- Vote in every local, state, and national election—and vote for candidates who put children over guns.
- Support organizations fighting gun violence, such as Everytown, March for Our Lives, and Giffords.
- Learn what other countries are doing. There are several of them with effective gun control.
- REFUSE TO ACCEPT THIS AS NORMAL. IT’S NOT. AND IT NEVER SHOULD BE.
You might feel numb. Angry. Hopeless. You’re not alone.
Silence is a form of consent. Don’t be silent.
