What Happened
Leading up to January 6th, 2021, Donald Trump incited fellow Americans to carry out an insurrection attempt to overturn the results of our presidential election. And for the rest of our lives, we have to commit to doing more than simply saying, never forget. We have to commit to always telling the full story of not only what happened on January 6th, but why it happened in the first place.
The story of how an American president named Donald Trump for months before the presidential election planted seeds that the election will be rigged. And when he lost the election, he continued to tell the big lie. A big lie that rested on white supremacy itself because his followers didn’t just believe the election was stolen, but that it was stolen by black and brown people living in inner cities.
When that day came, when January 6th came, he incited his followers to march down to our capitol and if necessary, murder the vice president, and if necessary, murder members of Congress.
Donald Trump not only was responsible for that but carried out the big lie and still does.
An Assault On Democracy Fueled By White Supremacy
So we have to remember not only what happened on January 6th, not only was it an assault on our democracy, but it was an assault fueled by white supremacy.
And we have to remember that here we are two years later, that chaos in the House of Representatives, the chaos about who will be the next speaker is directly tied to January 6th because those 20 Republicans who were holding up the process, the majority of them didn’t vote to certify Joe Biden as president two years ago.
But the rest of the Republican party for two years, they sat back and the majority of them refused to claim that Joe Biden was our legitimate president. They refused to denounce the insurrection that happened on January 6th.
So we can’t ever forget. January 6th was more than just an assault on our democracy. It was a defense of white supremacy.
Let’s remember, we must do more for the rest of our lives than simply saying, never forget.
We have to always tell the full story of what happened on that day and why it happened in the first place.
