No. Conservatives like to say that the United States is not a democracy, but a constitutional republic. Here’s what they mean:
- Elections can be overturned regardless of the results. By courts friendly to them. By legislatures friendly to them. Or by any other means.
- They say we’re not a democracy, so the will of the people doesn’t matter.
- It’s okay to suppress voting, we’re not a democracy.
- It’s okay if not all people can vote, we’re not a democracy.
- Any arguments against the electoral college are wrong because we’re not a democracy.
- Ignoring the will of the people in elections is okay because we’re not a democracy.
It’s an excuse for conservatives to install people who they want in power, in power.
