As more and more school boards across America ban books and remove the teaching of equality, we need to make sure our kids get an education that teaches all of history and culture.
Because of these school board takeovers by groups like Moms for Liberty and white Christian nationalists, it’s becoming clear we cannot rely on public education, but we also don’t want to give up fighting for the best public school system we can have. Public schools are the foundation of democracy.
Activist Tip: Take the time to know who is on your local school board and how they vote. Become more aware and get involved if you can.
The reason the Christian nationalist movement is trying to take over education and public education specifically is that they want to dismantle public education and they also want to make sure that they’re forcing people into private education, homeschooling, charter schools, and things that cannot be regulated. They want to control what kids learn.
This leads to preventing black kids from learning their own history but more important they want to prevent white kids from learning black history. What the next generation learns will have great impacts on our democracy and on racial justice for all of us in the future.
We need to make sure all kids learn black history as well as learn each other’s history, not a whitewashed history.
This is what we’re fighting for, justice for all kids and educators, especially black educators, and the body of knowledge that they’ve been building in our public schools. The battle is being waged because of dog whistles and because of anti-black racism, it’s being waged around black history, and black books.
If all groups of people are not a part of our national curriculum in schools, then they can be erased.
So we need to fight for black educators, we need to fight for black studies, and ethnic studies, and we need to fight for all children to learn all of history. The only way to do that is through a public education system. Do not give the oppressors what they want.
