British Columbia announced prescription contraception will be free for everyone starting April 1, 2023. Funding of $119,000,000 over the next three years will allow full coverage for prescription contraception. It includes oral hormone pills, contraceptive injections, intrauterine hormonal devices, subdermal plans, and Plan B.
That is what true progress looks like. Not this.
Because reproductive health is a central part of a comprehensive healthcare system, every person with the capacity to become pregnant should have access to the necessary tools to control their own reproductive health.
This decision means the financial burden imposed on 50% of the British Columbia population just so they can control if and when they become pregnant has been removed.
In our current political climate, where reproductive rights and autonomy for people with the capacity to become pregnant are under threat, this is what abortion care should look like in every country.
